Good Afternoon,

Last May, DVM NewsMagazine announced “Mississippi to allow chiropractors to practice on animals.” A new law, approved by the Governor on March 8, will allow chiropractors to treat animal patients on referral from a veterinarian. It further states that the chiropractor must have a current license from the Mississippi Board of Chiropractic Examiners and have completed an approved animal chiropractic course. (A provision in the original version of the bill to require direct veterinary supervision was removed). The new law went into effect on June 30, 2011.

What this may mean to you in your practice is, if you choose to refer a patient to a chiropractor, currently licensed in Mississippi, certified in animal chiropractic, then you may do so without the previous requirement of direct supervision. The direct supervision stipulation may have kept you from referring a patient to an animal chiropractor, because it was not possible or practical for you to attend the procedure to directly supervise.

Please permit me to introduce myself; I am Lance E. Cleveland, a currently licensed doctor of chiropractic in the state of Mississippi. I have been practicing in Mississippi since 1978. I gained my training in animal chiropractic in 2002 and 2003, and became certified in animal chiropractic by the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association, (AVCA), in January of 2004. The AVCA is considered by many to be the gold standard in animal chiropractic education and certification for chiropractors as well as veterinarians. A link to their website is found below for more information regarding the AVCA.

I will soon be sending a series of newsletters to you about animal chiropractic and my practice for your information. Please feel free to contact me regarding any questions that you may have at:

Thank you for your time and attention,
